It is clear that Novatel Wireless have really pushed the boat out with this one, combining their latest wireless technology into this compact little data card. Paired up with a decent laptop the Merlin XU870 ExpressCard is the ideal solution for users requiring reliable high speed data transfer rates when out and about. First impressions when opening the box are that the card is much smaller than expected. The unit also comes with a robust little travel case, a nice touch.

The XU870 card fits perfectly into by both ExpressCard/34 and ExpressCard/54 laptop slots. Once slotted into place only the antenna end is visible, neatly designed in solid matt black plastic with a clear LED data transfer indicator lamp. The LED changes colour depending on the connection type for example flashing green to indicate that there is a GPRS service available and that your are connected, purple for an EDGE connection and so on. The Merlin XU870 integrated antenna flips up to increase signal strength making the best use of the network reception available. The SIM slot is clearly marked and neatly tucked away underneath the antenna.
